Journal:
Now that I’m finally making progress on my DBZ fanfic, I’m really trying not to overthink and get stuck again. It’s especially hard because overanalyzing was the main reason I struggled to return to fanfic writing for so long. Impostor Syndrome hits me hard in those moments, making me doubt whether I truly am a fan or understand the material well enough. Interestingly, when I watch Dragon Ball to refresh my memory, it’s like I already know it so well that my mind is racing ahead by 10 episodes.
I also feel like my impostor syndrome hits the hardest when I look back on one of my longest-running fanfic. Even after extensive research that led to the same conclusion as the other writer, there was still enough evidence on where I drew inspiration for certain plot points. I guess I haven’t fully recovered from that. However, once I start writing, I find it hard to stop, and I genuinely put effort into my fanfics. The evidence of my inspiration came through when I was trying to rewrite their scenes that I personally didn’t like or I liked so much that I wanted to rewrite it in how I would have envisioned that moment. However, when I attempt to write the fic from the very beginning, I keep losing track of the main plot.
Hence, I took a long pause to write fanfics for a different fandom. In that fandom, I felt I was struggling to let my voice shine, while fighting against my people-pleasing tendencies. This resulted in losing interest and motivation to continue with that fandom.
So, after taking time to address my personal issues and review my work, I’m now approaching this with renewed motivation. This new drive has freed me from the need to please others in my writing, allowing me to finally craft my novel series exactly as I envisioned. Naturally, this also means returning to the Dragon Ball fandom, not only to write fanfics but also to create fanart. Instead of focusing on just one ship at a time, which previously caused burnout, I plan to explore all aspects of DB/Z/S/GT as I originally intended.
