The Call. Chapter 2

After leaving that small settlement I stuck to the road that led between settlements. As I walked, I saw more and more ruins of times long pass. I even came across an old battlefield. Maybe not that old based on how the crows still swarm amongst the bodies. From the armor and weapons, it seems this was a battle between two different human groups. How exhausting. Father did have books on how the mortals just love to rage war among themselves.

Speaking on mortals, there was no shadows in this field. Is that a good sign? And just when I was about to walk away is when the ground shook beneath me. So, I looked back to the battlefield and saw what the humans called a reaper. How interesting. This reaper held a scythe and swept it, clearing the field of bodies. Which had made the bodies float for a moment before turning to ash. Was that what reapers do? I can see why humans would be weary of them?

Speaking on which, seeing a reaper in person I can see more of why mortals thought I was a reaper. Besides the way shadows gather at my feet, it was what we wore and weapons. They wore long black hooded cloaks and carried a scythe. Maybe that was just a stereotype. Since I was mainly wearing an all black outfit. Though I was wearing a fitted pair of trousers and a loose long sleeve blouse, and heavy boots. But my weapon wasn’t a scythe. Granted, I walked around with my staff, but my main weapon was a sword. For which I carried all my weapons and supplies in my concealed cape. Yet maybe my staff is too similar to that of a scythe that it could easily be mistaken. Surely since the top of my staff was in the shape of a crescent moon.

Just as I was about to walk away is when the reaper suddenly was within arms reach. Their red eyes glowed before they grin, showcasing their sharp teeth. They then tried to bite me. If I didn’t held my staff to block them they would have gotten me. What is going on? None of father’s books spoke of creatures known as reapers. Hell, most of the books just spoke of plants and animals that exist in the mortal plains. But when I snuck that one book from Mr. Kashirn, it spoke that the mortal plain had main other races that were human. Some were dangerous while others were harmless. Yet even that didn’t mention reapers.

“I haven’t had fresh human in what felt like eons.” Damn it. I push the reaper back and snapped my fingers. Which sent my staff into my cloak and summoned my sword. When I see Mr. Kashirn again, besides giving him a piece of my mind, I’ll thank him for the gear. Speaking of which, I still found it strange he gave it to me 3 days before my 18th birthday.

As I fought back the reaper my mind wandered to why father stuttered when telling me I was going to lay a few souls to rest. It didn’t help that Mr. Kashirn was there. Whenever that chaotic old man shows up something always happens. Just like when I was suddenly in a water dimension when I attempted to go into the closed off library. Father and Mr. Kashirn are so… “SHIT!” I dodged the reaper in time before it got my shoulder. I’m wasting too much time with this thing. So I grabbed my second sword. A ribbon whip like sword that interchanges from whip to sword.

After I whipped around the reaper’s scythe, I pulled them close to be able to chop their head off. Once that was over the scythe disappeared. Interesting. Regardless now I can try to figure out why Mr. Kashirn and father were so suspicious around my 18th birthday. Now that I think of it I do remember one time when I was little overhearing father’s conversation with Mr. Kashirn about something to do with how long could one keep their mortal pup in the plain of the gods. I think I was 10 when I overheard that, and I have been living with father for a few months.
