Soft or Hard

What’s the funniest misunderstanding you’ve ever been part of?

To me it was funny, but to the other person it pissed them off, reasonably so.

What started as a text discussion between me and my ex-friend over my “un-aliving” thoughts and plans, there was a mention of meditation. In my defense, with how things were spiraling and I no longer wish to continue speaking on a sensitive topic that triggers me deeper in “not wishing to exist” I decided to change the topic.

I simply forgot two important things when doing this. 1) this is through text. 2) no amount of me using proper communication skills would ever make this person not blame me for her interpretations. With that said, because this was through texting I forgot to add an IMPORTANT context.

So to be asked:

“Do you like soft or hard shells? I personally like soft shells”

Under the context of “un-aliving” and one of use spiraling, this question can easily be interpreted as “do you like soft or hard shells pills?” When in fact I was asking about tacos. Because I left out the “tacos” part of the question, the misunderstanding was reasonable. I would not blame anyone for this misunderstanding because of the fact it was over text and the conversation leading to this was not funny.

Sure, me and this person had multiple misunderstandings in a lot of our conversations. Heck, a miscommunication has lead them to officially ditching me in Oregon. That’s right, this person is the sole reason I even moved to Oregon from NYC. Even when I have been very proactive in my communication style to adjust how to speak with them so they aren’t triggered, it was a very one sided “friendship”.
