Some reason I’m recalling how my mom once told me how in DR she was able to drink goat milk without a problem, but cow milk made her sick. Yet, in the states she has the opposite effect. Interesting.
Keep in mind, mom came from the country side of the Dominican Republic. So she’s used to very fresh ingredients. Along with seasonal foods. Even dad is like that. But he’s lactose intolerant, and not mom. I don’t share his intolerance to milk. I’m just sensitive to certain types of milks, like mom.
Anyways, I guess the memory was triggered because I’m once again doing going down a rabbit hole of figuring out what’s in season in this state. All so I can support local farmers. Also I missed looking forward to the perfect time between spring and summer when berries are ripen, and I picked them off the tree whenever I have to head to the store. I even had to memory my favorite spots throughout the city that grew these trees.
Out here I’m still learning what’s safe and not safe to eat. There’s blackberries and certain apples. But because I still am not sure of the timing I feel iffy about eating something that isn’t ripened yet.
I do know of a place that grows green grapes. I have to find another place. Along with spots that have apple trees.
I miss the peach tree one of my aunts had in their backyard, before they moved. I also just missed going about my business eating plants. But I do have to be extra careful in my new town.
I’m looking forward to seeing what will be available at the growers market, once winter is over. Especially if I could find specialty foods that are only available locally.
I have tried going to the growers market a few times before but I always got overwhelmed. Or I found out the people who sold vegetables and fruits were coming later in the season, and I ended up forgetting to go back.
But I will make a point to go throughout 2025. There’s so many things I’m my list that I will accomplish. Especially since this year I been going more and more to the farmers market, that I find more things that I actually eat and enjoy. All compared to big supermarkets. Only thing I’m missing is meats.
